places to go, people to meet

I was one of the mob OUTSIDE--heck, if you listen to the oldtimers there were 6 million in the bar!--my lover at that time and I had been to a Village theatre to see a play and then had gone to dinner--walking around we heard the noise near the west end of Christopher Street--we were told about what was happening, shrugged our shoulders and went home. We had been involved with the gay rights movement way before that--we belonged to the Mattachine Society, subscribed to One magazine and even wore Lambda pins before Stonewall!
And though it is not often referred to the funeral of Judy Garland took place 2 days before to an estimated 20,000 people and at the Stonewall you could hear her names referenced to all night by the people outside the 'riot'.
