it's true that ipanema is more expensive than copacabana, but there are some hotels there that are not too bad ... and it is in many ways a more agreeable neighborhood, and just that more convenient to the places you will want to go in the immediate vicinity.  i would narrow my recommendation down to staying on the copcabana side of ipanema, however, or the ipanema side of copacabana if you do decide to stay there!

even though most people suggested you to stay in Ipanema, I would like to point out that hotels in Ipanema, are way more expensive than in Copacabana. And since Copacabana is just a few blocks awaya from Ipanema, we tend to have our customers staying in Copacabana, for we are able to get them better hotel deals.

I am headed to Brazil for 10 days in late February.  Plans are flexible but thinking the time will be primarily spent in Rio and Sao Paulo.  Went last year and spent bulk of time elsewhere, including islands and the falls.

Single traveller looking for other singles or couples to share a meal or drink.  Plan to seriously check out saunas, cinemas, etc.

Ipanema is gorgeous! There's a commercial for Perrier which is shot on the beach, recognizable by the twin peaks at its end.  D

Thanks for the information. It is a help and a start. I have heard that Impanina is the place to stay so I will look for hotels there.

hi, jeff.
stay in ipanema is my recommendation. it is the gayest neighborhood in rio, although such a thing does not really exist there.  at the foot of farme de amoedo street is the prinicipal gay beach in rio, and on farme and the surrounding streets you will find lots of gay and gay-friendly businesses.  saunas depend on what you want.  most of them offer prostitutes, and so they cater to those who want to hire them.  the ones that don't, that i hear or know are good - depending on when you go, of course, since they can all be disappointing at times in terms of crowd, etc - are on rua redentor, terceiro de melo, and above le boy disco.  google for more information on exact names, location, okay?  hope this helps!  p.s.  i hear the amazon is cool, too, but i have never been there either.
