Comment by Ian McCallum on Wednesday I'll be doing this same Greek cruise out of Venice on the NCL Jade the last week of August. There are some great tips here. Thank you gentlemen. Any other info on the cruise would be greatly appreciated. I'm flying into Venice a week prior to the cruise so I have a few days to explore Italy (at least a few corners of it - not enough time to do a 'lot' of exploring)
Thanks men for your input which I will take seriously and definitely inform my companions. Any more suggestions is definitely welcome. James
Comment by Arno on May 17, 2012 at 14:44 James, great cruise. I am doing a similar one in 2014 with RCCL. As a Bear Cruise, www.BearCruiseUSA.com . Mykonos is VERY gay. Nightlife starts very late there, around midnight. As for Restaurants, stay away from the tourist traps, the same about Venice. Look for small local restaurants in the village and you get much better food. During the day go to Super Paradise, the Nude beach. You take a bus or you can take a boat. Check it out when you are there and ask people. As for Venice, it''s nice but not my favorite City. It is expensive, and as Michael said, when you sit down, you pay. Even the bread sticks they put on your table we all like to nibble on, they charge you big bucks for them. Stay away from the main street Restaurants, ask at a tourist desk where you find smaller local restaurants. Another thing, do NOT buy anything on the streets there. As much as you want it. Be aware of the little kids surrounding you and beg for money. They come in large groups and surround you, while trying to steel everything you have in your pocket. Keep your wallet in the front pocket. When the kids come push them away. Believe me, been there done that. It's organized crime. If one of them get your wallet, they all spread out in different directions and you have no idea who has it. Oh if you wear those belly pockets, they usually come with a big map and hold it right against your belly to sell you a map and underneath they grab the money/ wallet, cc whatever. Just be careful.
Two other quick reminders. Be sure to notify your bank and credit card company if you plan to use their cards outside your usual area so they don't block their use. You can use them at ATM's to get Euros easily on shore. Also some credit cards don't charge a foreigh transaction fee if you use them to purchase something-could save you an extra 3-5% depending on card.
Comment by Michaelmouse1 on May 16, 2012 at 8:25 James, Venice is a wonderful walking city. Try to get out of the tourist areas and visit the local food markets about 15 mins from St.Mark's Square. If you can go to the Opera House that would be a treat even if you don't like Opera! concerts and opera lists here:http://www.veniceconcerts.com/?gclid=CMWPh6aghLACFVGZpAodejAbjA
As for things to do check this out:

Some events are only on during ODD numbered years though!
Here are a selection the BEST things to dom in Venice

If you can pre-pay you can be assured of not missing out as it will be peak season. Read this but don't be put off:

As for changing money the Euro is very low right now so don't buy too much. Use your credit card as much as possible or just but a few hundred dollars worth at your local bank before you go. Check banks for best exchange rates though! If this is your first time in Italy be aware of their odd pricing structure in bars and cafes....if you sit down you will pay almost double, so if you are happy to stand and have a coffee you will save by doing so. The 'fixed price' menus will also save you heaps, though the selection will be limited and sometimes hit and miss. They are called Menu turistico, prezzo fisso, or pranzo veloce. GREAT tips on eating in Venice here:http://www.italyheaven.co.uk/veneto/venice/eating.html
Food in Venice is usually rather dissappointing, unlike the rest of Italy. Check out 'Harry's Bar', of course: http://www.harrysbarvenezia.com/
You really can't go to Venice without at least stopping by it! The prices may scare you but have a cocktail if you can!
Sounds like a wonderful holiday! The Greek Isalnds are magical! Enjoy!
