Comment by mauloa on March 7, 2012 at 18:35 I flew Jet Airways from Toronto to Singapore via Brussels and Mumbai last year, and their inflight service and food in economy class were excellent. I still prefer Emirates, Singapore Airlines, and Thai Airways, but Jet Airways' fares were the lowest by far. Turkish Airlines (Toronto to Istanbul and beyond) is also very good, and sometimes on their website they offer discounted fares that are comparable to or even lower than Jet Airways' rates. Turkish Airlines also offer a free half-day or full-day Istanbul tour (lunch included) for their transit passengers - the shuttle picks up the passengers at the airport, show them the major sites of interest, treat them to lunch, a bit more sightseeing, then brings the passengers back to the airport...all for free. Istanbul is a beautiful city for transit or for a stopover...free or otherwise. FromMay till October, the lowest trans-Atlantic airfare between Toronto and Europe is usually offered by Icelandair, with a free stopover in Reykjavik (their stopover hotel package is quite good value as well, considering how expensive everything is in Iceland). Malev Hungarian Airlines used to offer very inexpensive flights between Toronto and Budapest in the summer months, but unfortunately they stopped flying (entire route network) a few weeks ago. Enjoy Jet Airways if you do fly with them...if you enjoy Indian cuisine, their inflight meals (Indian food option) is a treat, but should be pre-ordered when confirming the flight.
Jet Airways seems to have the lowest transatlantic fares these days.
They fly between Brussels and New York and Toronto. The airline is based in India. Has anyone flown them before and if so, what are your impressions?

Comment by Brett on April 13, 2011 at 4:23 @ John Fowler Youth hostels are good and age doesn't matter. They take old farts like me. Also couchsurfing.net They have regular meeting in most areas of the world. Great people and great hosts
John, I've seen travelogues about a trans-Canada rail trip. You might consider that. I don't know much about the details - perhaps there's a seniors' discount. Also, there may be senior groups or organizations that sponsor or host trips similar to the US' AARP. You could also take an extended tour with bus service - perhaps to the Maritime provinces or out west to Manitoba, Alberta, etc.
I don't know if Canada has an extensive hostel or pensioner lodging which could save on costs.
