Hi John, I think you will find Costa Rica a safe destination. I recommend taking caution as you would in any major city even in the U.S. the weather might be a little "iffy" in October and November. Traditionally that is the end of our rainy season so be sure to take an umbrella in case the rain lingers around a bit later. I think you'll find traveling solo not only safe but also fun. You'll have several opportunities to meet new friends and don't be shy about asking fellow travelers to join you on tours and side trips.

Yourbigbro, so happy to hear you enjoyed Costa Rica. Will look forward to seeing your photos. I love the bus system in Costa Rica and glad to hear you took advantage of it. Sorry to hear about your experience at the Grand Hotel. Your information is helpful. I have a friend who always stays there when in town because of their budget rate and central location but just uses it for a place to sleep. Hope you return soon, there's always more to see and explore in Costa Rica. Pura Vida!!

I stayed at Villa Roca, Colours Oasis, and Casa 69 that are all gay or gay friendly and were great.  The pool at Villa Roca is amazing!  Colours is a little far from downtown and the scene, but the super nice staff and hotel.  I took a bus to get downtown and the cab ride back wasn't too bad late at night.

I stayed one night at the Grand Hotel right in the plaza downtown and it was homophobic, hard beds, no a/c, tiny bathroom, noisy all night long, and one of the worst hotel stays in my life.

I just got back from Costa Rica at the end of April.  I was there for 10 days and also traveling solo.  I had no problems at all and never felt any issues with safety.  The people were all very friendly.  It was a great trip. This reminds me I should post some photos here.

My first visit is coming soon also.  April 19-28.  I am staying at the Colours resort also, but only my last 2 nights.  First 2 nights at the Villa Roca in Manuel Antonio. Then a couple in San Jose to day trip to Arenal volcano.  Then a couple nights in Puerto Veijo at a small jungle beach hut.

Jim... I hope you have a great trip!  Save a couple of the Tico men for me. haha

Hi Jim, You will enjoy Colours resort, great people there and they will be happy to recommend tours and trips for you. Many places are just a day trip away from the city and of course there is the night life of the city with many clubs which offer a great time as well. Don't' be afraid of the bus system in San Jose if you don't have a car, they are cheap and go everywhere and taxis are a  good option too.

My first visit to Costa Rica is coming up soon - from April 19 to 26, 2012.  I am looking forward to it!  I will be staying at the Colours Oasis Resort.  Any suggestions of sights I should not miss?

So far I have no idea.  I am flying into San Jose.  I hope to spend a couple of nights on each coast.  I have the next month or two to figure that all out.  Any recommendations?
