My husband and I tend to vacation there quite a bit (then again, only a little under 3 hours from San Diego). Our favorite place to stay right now is Chaps Inn (clothing not required, caters to leather/bear/levis crowd, very friendly place). North end of town, but its easy enough to call a cab when you need one. Tons of gay guesthouses/Inns in the Warm Sands area as well, within walking distance (longer walk) to Arenas where most of the gay nightlife is... not a recommended walk in the summer months though, then again I wouldn't recommend walking ANYWHERE in Palm Springs in the summer.
