places to go, people to meet
Despite fierce opposition from a wide range of political and minority groups, Indonesia's parliament has approved a tough new anti-pornography law. If it's signed by the president, the law would ban images, gestures or talk deemed to be pornographic.
Islamic parties said the law was needed to protect women and children against exploitation and to curb increasing immorality in Indonesian society. (more at BBC News)
Meanwhile, Minister of Communication and Information, Tifatul Sembiring has forced BlackBerry to block a wide range of web sites. Earlier this month, via his twitter account, Tifatul gave RIM an ultimatum to either filter pornographic content from its products by Jan. 21, 2011 or be banned from Indonesia, after they had apparently ignored earlier requests to do so. There are an estimated 2 million BlackBerry users in Indonesia. (more here)

Permalink Reply by Ketut Chaser on January 31, 2011 at 13:33 Honey, that Tiffie (that's how i call Tifatul Sembiring) is going down very soon, and when it happens, i will definitely celebrate it on the street.
Well, it is true by now that i can not access my fav porn sites to help me finishing my hormonal urge every morning. As an asian, i have 3 mobile phones and 3 of them are internet enabled which each of them running on different provider, all of them can not access porn sites.
That reminds of the old days, when Tiffie just started his job as a moral policeman, he said 80% of porn sites had been blocked, i found out my fav porn sites are still accessible :) i mocked him and his IT team, but now i can only slander him LOL!
But most of cable connections and internet cafes are not blocked :)
So now the question is, why only mobile connection? what would happen to those social scientists who are doing their research on sex related matters? they wouldnt be able to get their data on dating sites anymore?
Permalink Reply by Carl on January 31, 2011 at 15:35 Well, I guess guys like Tiffy consider it 'Un-Islamic' to desire to view pornography...in contrast to the fact that some of the worlds best erotica was produced in Islamic societies in past times.
I am a collector of phallic symbols and erotic art pieces, and Indonesia is one of my most 'fertile' hunting grounds...I have some lovely erotic objects found in Indonesia.
Indonesian men are no different than men in any other society...same motivations, same desires!
Try as they may, Islamic hardliners will never stamp out the desire for pornography...it will simply go underground...and be a little more difficult for men of limited means to acquire.
Why do these Islamists imagine that they know what is good for everyone else?
The most dangerous people in this world are those who think they know the will of God...whether they be Islamic, Christian or anything else!
Permalink Reply by Carl on May 16, 2011 at 17:47 I am now wondering where this will all end. If the Muslim extremists are allowed to continue as they are, one by one the freedoms that Indonesian people have enjoyed will be gone. The attacks in Jakarta on a fringe Islamic group is just the beginning...these hardliners will gain confidence with each new attack. It seems that the government and the police are not curbing their powers, and if the majority of freedom loving, moderate Muslims do nothing, then they will live to regret their inaction. Once freedom is gone, it is very much harder to regain!
