I don´t know  if you´ve already been to Colombia. But Bogota is a must. There is the gold museum, the Zona Rosa, Montserrat... great restaurants, fun to be with people and gorgeous men...

Hi all,

I will be traveling in December to the Havana Jazz International Jazz Festival. Has anyone been to Havana lately? Any tips or advice welcomed.

I am a complete gringo....look at the pic for proof, and have been traveling to Sud America for thirty years. For the last 15 or so, I have been with my partner (even more gringo than me) to Argentina, Chile, Peru, Brazil, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Costa Rica. I lived and traveled through most of S. A. in my mid twenties, I went to many other places and we will go to Ecuador together at Christmas. One must disassociate poverty from danger when there. They are not the same.

I am anxious to return to Columbia which was quite intimidating when I went many years ago. Our only bad experience was in Rio, which i would suggest skipping in favor of some of the more authentic places in Brazil. Other than that, be as careful as you would be in Philadelphia (our home town), and enjoy the amazing hospitality of the Americans in the southern hemisphere. Despite our country's amazingly inept historic foreign policies in the region, they are just like us.....seeking peace, prosperity and happiness and are remarkably taken with our culture.

Oh, and just as an aside, do you know South Africa is rated as the 5th most dangerous place to visit in the world. I kind of agree, we have had 11 international journalists robbed (some at machine gun point) since the world cup started.

Ramzi, I am sure I would stick out as a gringo (6'4" and Germanic looking) in Colombia. The tricky thing is not to look like an American. Out of the Colombian cities, which is the smallest and friendliest. Don't want a big city and typical club/bar stuff
