Comment by Marty on October 22, 2012 at 19:48 Don, great suggestion. I'll give this a try tomorrow at they gym. Many thanks.
Comment by Don on October 22, 2012 at 18:46 marty, it's also better to do the cardio after the strength training, as the body is already in fat-burning mode. it ups the caloric-burning factor of the cardio when you do that - although you might want to eat a protein bar or drink a protein shake in between, as the quicker you intake protein after strength training, the faster your muscle recovery is (less muscle fatigue and soreness later and the next day).
Comment by Marty on October 22, 2012 at 12:43 TexBear, thanks so much for the helpful info. Makes total sense.
Marty, maybe you should up the strength training time and cut down on the cardio work. Cardio loses effectiveness after 30-45 minutes.
Comment by Marty on October 20, 2012 at 17:41 I'm 65, have been working out my entire life. Up until 6 years ago, I was a marathon runner, now I'm at the gym 4 times a week, walking 3 miles and doing 30 minutes of strength training each time. My concern is that I can't seem to get rid of my gut. I watch my caloric intake and am very conscientious about working out. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I've been working out for about 2 1/2 years now. I lost weight due to counting calories and exercising vigorously.
My current routine is to start with 10 minutes of cardio, do 4 sets of four strength training with core exercises after each set, 20 more minutes of cardio and a five minute cool down. I also drink a whey protein shake after I shower.
I've found some helpful tips from Davey Wavey Fitness (on You Tube) and you can sign up for email advice. I also found helpful information with Bodybuilding For You that provides tips on burning fat and building muscle.
