USA:- Obama to honour Harvey Milk and Billie Jean King with the Medal of Freedom

The USA's highest civilian honour, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, is being awarded posthumously to assassinated San Francisco gay rights campaigner Harvey Milk, among others. Also to receive the award at a White House ceremony on August 12th is former tennis player Billie Jean King.

Ryanair launches new low-cost flights to the Canary Islands

"Ryanair is delighted to open 39 new routes to/from the Canary Islands in October which will allow us to bring more low fares, more competition and choice to even more consumers/visitors of the Canary Islands."

This will be made up of 16 new routes to Gran Canaria, 15 to Lanzarote and 8 to Tenerife (now 16 in total). The company says it's because the Spanish authorities have dramatically reduced airport taxes.

USA:- Choreographer and dancer Merce Cunningham has died

One of the greatest names in contemporary dance, Merce Cunningham (seen above in a film portrait for his 2007 Rockefeller award), has died peacefully at his home in New York. He was 90, and still working as a choreographer. For many years he lived with his partner, composer John Cage.
