Washington, USA: Amazon Chief Donates Whopping $2.5 Mill for Equal Marriage!

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has donated a very generous $2.5 million to Washington State's Referendum 74 which was set up and chaired by a gay former employee and friend of Bezos to keep gay marriage on the statute book.

Although marriage equality in Washington State was signed into law earlier this year, the religious right managed to force the issue to go into a referendum.

The chair of Referendum 74 emailed her former boss and requested that he make a donation. This is what transpired during an email exchange:

“Jeff, I suspect you support marriage equality,” she wrote. “I beg you not to sit on the sidelines and hope the vote goes our way. Help us make it so.”

Two days later, she received an email from Bezos and his wife.

“Jen,” the e-mail said, “this is right for so many reasons. We're in for $2.5 million. Jeff and Mackenzie.

The Bezos’ generous donation has doubled funds available to proponents of Referendum 74, making them the largest financial backers of same-sex marriage in the country.
